Rank and Rent Reddit

What Do Real People Say?

Rank and Rent Reddit has many different opinions about the business model. After looking through recent and older discussions, the overall sentiment is:

“Rank and Rent still works in 2026, but it’s harder than it used to be.”

As someone who’s been doing Rank and Rent for over 11 years, I’ll show you what Reddit gets right, where I disagree, and what I’ve learned from doing this myself.

What Do People on Reddit Say About Rank and Rent?

1. “Rank and Rent Still Works But You Need to Niche Down”

One Reddit user says Rank and Rent still works, but you need to niche down. They recommend choosing services with sufficient search demand but lower competition, such as “toilet replacement” rather than “plumbing.”

I agree that niche selection matters more than ever. Instead of targeting broad, highly competitive services, look for specialized services with lower competition. But to make it a profitable Rank and Rent niche, it should also be a high-ticket service, like “drywall installation.” This gives you a better chance of ranking while making each lead more valuable.

2. “Most People Set Up Fake Google Business Profiles to Succeed With Rank and Rent”

One Reddit user complained that most people set up fake Google Business Profiles to succeed with Rank and Rent. They didn’t like that approach and decided the model wasn’t for them.

However, in my experience, you don’t need a Google Business Profile to build a successful Rank and Rent business. Organic websites generate plenty of leads on their own. Plus, GBP verification slows you down. I’d rather focus on building 10-15 semantically rich websites that rank organically. A GBP is only useful for low-ticket, emergency services where customers often call directly from Google Maps instead of visiting a website.

3. “Rank and Rent Is Only Semi-Passive Income”

A person on Reddit says that Rank and Rent is only semi-passive income. They argue that it can become mostly passive after 18-24 months and 5-10 successful sites. Before that point, you need to actively manage the business. To them, most people quit within a year because they expect to build the sites once and expect the money to roll in.

That’s true. You need to put in the work to build and rank quality websites. But that work has an endpoint. Once your sites rank and generate consistent leads, they need little maintenance. You can move on to building new websites. Compare that to a business model like an SEO or AI automation agency, where you’re providing an ongoing service to clients and may need to maintain, update, or support their systems to keep the relationship and recurring revenue.

4. “Renting Your Site Isn’t the Best Way to Make Money”

A Redditor says renting your site isn’t the best way to make money. Instead, they say to sell the leads and treat it as a lead generation business.

It’s good to start by selling leads, but monthly rental fees are also a good way to earn consistent income. I say start with a commission-based model when you first monetize Rank and Rent websites. Ask for 5%-10% of the revenue generated by the leads. This shows the value of your website. Once you build trust with the local business, switch to a monthly rental fee of $500 to $3,000 for consistent income. Or, you can use a hybrid model: charge a low monthly fee plus a small commission for each converted lead.

5. “Rank and Rent Doesn’t Work”

A Reddit user says Rank and Rent doesn’t work. They tried it themselves with no results, and others they know had the same experience.

That’s a fair take. Rank and Rent isn’t for everyone. Google’s SEO changes constantly, ranking a new website takes more work, and approaching business owners feels intimidating. You really need up-to-date SEO, website-building, and negotiation skills. But that’s also an advantage. The extra work filters out people looking for quick and easy money. This creates a moat that protects you from competition.

6. “Local Businesses Want Leads, Not Just Rankings”

This Reddit user says local businesses want leads, not just rankings. They expect calls that turn into customers. That means you need to build Rank and Rent websites with solid SEO fundamentals and real authority instead of relying on quick shortcuts.

I strongly agree with this. In 2026, thin 10-page sites and generic AI content aren’t enough. You need to build topical authority, create a strong site structure, improve the user experience, and give visitors clear reasons to take action. Your Rank and Rent site should feel like a real local business, not just a website built to capture leads.

7. “Rank and Rent Is Not for Beginners”

A Redditor says Rank and Rent is not for beginners. They believe you need strong SEO skills and experience ranking local websites to make money with the model. They see it as a better fit for people who already work in SEO full-time.

Yes, SEO skills are important, but beginners can start with the basics. You can use proven tools and frameworks and build your skills from there. It’s actually one of the easier businesses for beginners because it focuses on local rather than global markets, has minimal startup costs and risk, and doesn’t require a personal brand or audience.

8. “The Rank and Rent Model Can Easily Crash With Google Updates”

Someone on Reddit says the Rank and Rent model can easily crash with Google updates. They claim it’s not a solid, long-term business.

However, that’s not true. I’ve been doing Rank and Rent for 11+ years, and my websites have continued to perform through major Google updates, including the March 2024 Helpful Content Update. Again, it all boils down to doing SEO the right way: building authoritative websites, creating useful content, and focusing on the user.

9. “Rank and Rent Is Easy to Sell to Local Business Owners”

A Redditor says Rank and Rent is easy to sell to local business owners. Their approach is to target business owners already paying for ads. Give them free leads first. Once they see the leads are bringing in revenue, they’re happy to pay for the next ones. With this strategy, the Reddit user now earns $25,000 a month after just 2 years.

This is also the strategy I use, but I take it a step further. I add a whisper message to let the business owner know the leads came from me. That gives me a reason to call and say, “I’m the guy who sent you those free leads. I’m not making a cold sales call. However, I admit that negotiation skills are important because talking to business owners is intimidating, especially when they know exactly what they want.

10. “Rank and Rent Works if You Stick With It”

One Redditor says that Rank and Rent works if you stick with it. This way, you can overcome any challenge, even if Google throws obstacles your way. However, they admit that while Rank and Rent is now their full-time job, they’re not making enough yet to afford houses or Lamborghinis. They are earning a living from it and plan to grow from there.

You need to treat Rank and Rent like a real business. It’s not a get-rich-quick scheme. Start small as a side income and, when a few websites are doing well, scale with more Rank and Rent websites. Over time, this can grow into a full-time income, and you can quit your 9-to-5. With my 50+ websites, I now make a monthly average of $52,000.

Is Rank and Rent Worth It In 2026?

Yes, Rank and Rent is worth it in 2026 because:

  • It still works. Well-optimized local websites continue to generate leads despite Google updates.
  • It eventually becomes passive income. Once your sites rank and generate consistent leads, you earn ongoing income with very little maintenance.
  • There’s less competition. You’re targeting specific cities and services instead of competing with businesses across the entire internet.
  • It’s evergreen. Home service businesses always need leads, and homeowners will always need services like plumbing, roofing, and tree removal. You’re the middleman that brings them together.
  • It’s easy to scale. Once you figure out what works, you can build more websites across different cities and niches.

Rank and Rent Reddit FAQs

Is Rank and Rent Still Viable in 2026?

Yes, Rank and Rent is still viable in 2026. Local businesses continue to need leads, and well-optimized local websites can generate those leads through organic search. Since 78% of local searches lead to a hired service within 24-48 hours, these leads are valuable, and businesses are willing to pay for them.

Has Anyone Ever Made Rank and Rent Work?

Yes, people have made Rank and Rent work. My Grand Rapids Tree Care website, which I built in 2015, generates 30-50 leads and makes $2,000 per month. Today, it has generated $192,000 in total revenue with a 95% profit margin. Dan Klein’s EDH Pool Cleaning website generates 40-70 leads per month and ranks at the top of the SERPs without a GBP listing. Also, just check Reddit, and you’ll see a lot of people earning real money from Rank and Rent.

What Is the Business Model for Selling Leads?

Local SEO lead generation is the business model for selling leads. Instead of renting a site for a flat monthly fee, you earn a commission from the revenue generated by the site’s leads. For example, if a lead results in a $40,000 roofing job and you receive a 5% commission, you make $2,000 from that single lead.

What Are the Best Rank and Rent Niches?

High-ticket, non-franchise local services are the best Rank and Rent niches. This includes specialized contracting, tree removal, epoxy flooring, or foundation work. These niches have higher lead values and less competition than saturated services dominated by large companies and franchises.

What Is the Hardest Part of Rank and Rent?

Finding a local business to pay you is the hardest part of Rank and Rent. This is why you must provide value right away. Send free leads first to build trust. When local business owners see your value, it’s easier to ask them to pay.

Should You Do Rank and Rent?

Yes, you should do Rank and Rent. It’s a scalable business that generates recurring income from websites you own. The biggest advantage is that you’re building digital assets instead of constantly trading your time for client work.

Rank and Rent is also low risk. Even if it doesn’t work out, you’ll only spend a few dollars and some time while learning valuable SEO, website-building, and lead-generation skills. That knowledge can help you long after your first Rank and Rent website.

However, it isn’t a walk in the park. You need to learn SEO, build quality websites, find profitable niches, rank in Google, and pitch to local business owners.
